LOWER MOUNT ROYAL
SW Calgary, Alberta
SW CALGARY, ALBERTA
Calgary’s Mount Royal district continues to be one of Calgary’s most prestigious residential communities. Originally developed by the CPR, Mount Royal used to be known as “American Hill” due to the number of wealthy American entrepreneurs who built here in the early 1900’s…Unlike the Upper Mount Royal district, however, Lower Mount Royal was subdivided into fifty foot lots, and wood and stucco were the predominant building materials as compared to the brick and sandstone of Upper Mount Royal. Many of the lots were further subdivided into twenty-five foot lots and developed with houses, similar to those of the Beltline district. This community has experienced dramatic changes in the last twenty years. Much of its residential and growing commercial areas have been redeveloped to accommodate Calgary’s rapid growth. Currently, this lively neighbourhood, which runs along 17th Ave, features many trendy eateries, shops, other businesses, and great nightlife. The oldest high school of Calgary is one of the many features of this borough, along with many good coffee shops, and some trendy boutique stores. At night, the clubs, bars, and lounges are abounding with a budding music scene.
